Description

Classic 7 Layer Bars are a delightful no-fuss dessert combining a crunchy graham cracker crust, a creamy layer of sweetened condensed milk, and a rich topping of butterscotch chips, semi-sweet chocolate chips, coconut, and chopped pecans, baked to golden perfection for a chewy, sweet treat.

Ingredients

Scale

Crust

  • 1ยฝ cups graham cracker crumbs
  • ยฝ cup salted butter, melted

Layers

  • 14 ounce can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 cup butterscotch chips
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1โ…“ cup flaked coconut
  • 1 cup chopped pecans

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare Pan: Preheat your oven to 350ยฐF (175ยฐC) and lightly coat a 9×13-inch baking pan with nonstick spray. Line the pan with parchment paper allowing the paper to hang over the edges for easy bar removal later.
  2. Prepare Crust: In a bowl, combine the graham cracker crumbs with the melted butter until fully incorporated, then press this mixture firmly and evenly into the bottom of the prepared pan to form the crust.
  3. Add Sweetened Condensed Milk: Evenly drizzle the full can of sweetened condensed milk over the graham cracker crust, spreading it gently to cover the surface without mixing.
  4. Add Remaining Layers: Layer the butterscotch chips, followed by the semi-sweet chocolate chips, then sprinkle the flaked coconut evenly over these, and finally add the chopped pecans. Press down gently with a fork to ensure the layers stay together.
  5. Bake: Place the pan in the oven and bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until the top is lightly golden and bubbly around the edges.
  6. Cool and Cut: Remove the pan from the oven and while still warm, carefully loosen the edges with a knife for easy removal. Cool completely on a wire rack before lifting out using the parchment paper overhang. Cut into 24 squares with a sharp knife.

Notes

  • Using parchment paper with overhang makes it easy to lift the bars from the pan for cutting and serving.
  • Pressing layers gently helps them adhere together but avoid mixing layers to maintain distinctions.
  • Store bars in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days or refrigerate for longer freshness.
  • For a nut-free version, omit the pecans and substitute with extra coconut or seeds.
  • Chilling before cutting can result in cleaner slices.
