Ingredients
Scale
Cracker Base
- 40-48 saltine crackers (about 1 1/2 sleeves)
Toffee Layer
- 1 cup butter (salted or unsalted, 2 sticks)
- 1 cup packed dark brown sugar
Topping
- 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips (or milk chocolate chips, white chocolate, or combination)
- ½ cup sprinkles (or M&M’s, crushed candy canes, or candies of choice to decorate)
Instructions
- Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350℉ (175℃) to prepare for baking the toffee layer.
- Prepare the Baking Sheet: Line a 15″×10″ rimmed sheet pan with parchment paper or aluminum foil sprayed with cooking spray, or use a nonstick silicone baking mat to prevent sticking.
- Arrange the Crackers: Place the saltine crackers in a single even layer on the bottom of the lined sheet pan. Break crackers as needed to fill gaps along the edges, ensuring a full, even coverage.
- Make the Toffee: In a medium-sized pot over medium-low heat, melt the butter and add the packed dark brown sugar. Stir occasionally until it reaches a rolling boil. Maintain the boil and cook for 3 minutes until the mixture bubbles actively and turns an amber color. Remove from heat immediately. (Optional: Use a candy thermometer to ensure the mixture reaches between 270℉-290℉ for the perfect toffee consistency.)
- Pour Toffee Over Crackers: Carefully pour the hot butter and sugar mixture evenly over the crackers in the pan. Quickly spread it out evenly with a spatula to cover all crackers.
- Bake the Toffee: Place the sheet pan in the preheated oven and bake for 3-5 minutes, or until the toffee starts to bubble vigorously.
- Add Chocolate Chips: Remove the pan from the oven and immediately sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly over the hot toffee layer. Let them sit for 1-2 minutes to soften.
- Spread the Chocolate: Use a spatula to spread the softened chocolate chips evenly over the toffee. If the chocolate is not melting easily, return the pan to the oven for another 1-2 minutes, then spread.
- Decorate: While the chocolate is still melted, sprinkle your choice of sprinkles, crushed candies, or M&M’s evenly over the top for festive color and crunch.
- Cool and Set: Allow the toffee to cool completely at room temperature or refrigerate for 30 minutes to 1 hour until the chocolate hardens completely.
- Break Into Pieces: Once set, flip the baking tray over to remove the toffee from the pan. Peel off the parchment or foil, then break or cut the toffee into bite-sized pieces.
- Serve and Store: Serve immediately and enjoy this sweet and salty treat. Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature or in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
Notes
- Using dark brown sugar creates a richer, deeper toffee flavor than light brown sugar.
- A candy thermometer helps achieve the perfect toffee consistency for maximum crunchiness.
- You can substitute semi-sweet chocolate chips with milk chocolate, white chocolate, or a mix for various flavor profiles.
- Get creative with toppings like crushed candy canes, M&M’s, or any colorful sprinkles to match your festive theme.
- For easier cleanup, use parchment paper or foil and ensure it’s well sprayed with cooking spray.
- Store the treat at room temperature for a softer texture or in the fridge for firmer chocolate.
