Description

This Cinnamon Roll French Toast Casserole combines the warm, spicy flavors of cinnamon rolls with the classic comfort of French toast. Perfect for a festive breakfast or brunch, it features layers of cinnamon roll pieces soaked in a rich custard and baked to golden perfection, then topped with a sweet icing drizzle.

Ingredients

Scale

Cinnamon Rolls

  • 2 cans refrigerated cinnamon rolls with icing

Custard Mixture

  • 6 large eggs
  • 0.5 cup milk
  • 0.5 cup heavy cream
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 0.25 cup maple syrup

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare Dish: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish to prevent sticking.
  2. Prepare Cinnamon Rolls: Open the cinnamon roll tubes and cut each roll into quarters. Spread these pieces evenly in the prepared baking dish to form the base layer.
  3. Mix Custard: In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, ground cinnamon, vanilla extract, and maple syrup until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
  4. Pour Custard Over Rolls: Pour the custard mixture evenly over the cinnamon roll pieces. Gently press the pieces down slightly to help them soak up the custard.
  5. Rest: Let the assembled casserole sit for 10 minutes. This allows the cinnamon rolls to absorb the custard, resulting in a moist and flavorful bake.
  6. Cover and Bake: Cover the dish with foil and bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes. This initial covered baking helps set the custard without drying out the top.
  7. Uncover and Finish Baking: Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10 to 15 minutes or until the casserole is golden brown on top and fully set in the middle.
  8. Cool and Serve: Remove from the oven and let cool for 5 minutes. Drizzle the icing that came with the cinnamon rolls over the top before serving warm for a deliciously sweet finish.

Notes

  • Allowing the casserole to rest before baking improves custard absorption and texture.
  • Use a toothpick or knife to check if the casserole is set in the center before removing from the oven.
  • For a dairy-free version, substitute milk and cream with almond or oat milk and use dairy-free cinnamon rolls if available.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated and reheated gently in the microwave or oven.
