Description

A classic Southern-style sausage gravy that’s quick and easy to prepare. This creamy, flavorful gravy made with browned breakfast sausage and a smooth milk base is perfect for serving over biscuits or your favorite breakfast dishes.

Ingredients

Scale

Sausage Gravy Ingredients

  • 1 pound bulk ground pork breakfast sausage (mild or hot)
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 to 2 1/2 cups milk
  • Salt, to taste
  • Pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Brown the Sausage: In a large skillet over medium-high heat, crumble and brown the sausage. Allow it to brown well to develop flavor. Do not drain the grease.
  2. Add Flour and Cook: Sprinkle the flour evenly over the browned sausage and stir well. Cook this mixture for 2 to 3 minutes, stirring constantly to cook out the raw flour taste.
  3. Add Milk and Simmer: Gradually add the milk in increments, stirring thoroughly after each addition to combine. Reduce the heat to a simmer and allow the gravy to thicken, stirring frequently to prevent lumps. Adjust the milk quantity to reach desired thickness.
  4. Season and Serve: Season the gravy with salt and plenty of black pepper to taste. Serve the gravy immediately over warm biscuits or your preferred breakfast dish.

Notes

  • For thicker gravy, use about 2 cups of milk; for thinner gravy, add up to 2 1/2 cups or more as needed.
  • Do not drain the sausage grease as it adds essential flavor and fat to the gravy.
  • Use mild or hot sausage depending on your spice preference.
  • This gravy pairs perfectly with warm, flaky biscuits for a traditional Southern breakfast.
  • Stir frequently during simmering to avoid lumps and sticking.
