Description

A classic Southern comfort food, this Easy Sausage Gravy recipe features flavorful browned breakfast sausage simmered in a creamy, peppery milk-based gravy. Perfect for serving over warm biscuits for a hearty breakfast or brunch.

Ingredients

Scale

Sausage Gravy Ingredients

  • 1 pound bulk ground pork breakfast sausage (mild or hot)
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 to 2 1/2 cups milk
  • Salt, to taste
  • Pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Brown the Sausage: In a large skillet over medium-high heat, crumble the ground pork sausage and cook until it is browned and starting to crisp. Be sure not to drain the grease as it will add flavor and help thicken the gravy.
  2. Add the Flour: Sprinkle the all-purpose flour over the browned sausage. Stir constantly and cook for 2 to 3 minutes to eliminate the raw flour taste and to allow the flour to absorb the sausage fat.
  3. Incorporate the Milk: Gradually add 2 to 2 1/2 cups of milk while stirring continuously. Reduce the heat to a simmer and cook until the gravy thickens, stirring frequently to prevent lumps or burning. Adjust thickness by using more or less milk as desired.
  4. Season and Serve: Season the gravy with salt and a generous amount of black pepper to taste. Serve hot immediately, traditionally over freshly baked biscuits.

Notes

  • Use mild or hot sausage based on your spice preference.
  • Do not drain grease from sausage as it enhances flavor and thickens gravy.
  • Adjust milk to reach your desired gravy thickness.
  • Serve over biscuits, toast, or even scrambled eggs for a complete meal.
  • For a richer gravy, whole milk or half-and-half can be used instead of skim or low-fat milk.
