Description

French Onion Burgers combine the rich, savory flavor of caramelized onions with juicy, seasoned beef patties, topped with melty Provolone cheese and served on soft hamburger buns. This recipe brings the classic French onion soup taste to your burger, enhanced with sour cream-infused onions and optional toppings like barbecue sauce, potato chips, and pickles for an irresistible meal perfect for grilling season or any casual dinner.

Ingredients

Scale

Caramelized Onions

  • 1 large yellow onion
  • 2 Tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 teaspoon beef bouillon granules
  • 1/4 cup sour cream

Burgers

  • 1 pound ground beef (85% ground chuck recommended)
  • 1 packet Lipton onion soup mix
  • 1 egg
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • 4 Provolone cheese slices

Toppings (Optional)

  • Green leaf lettuce
  • Regular potato chips
  • Dill pickles
  • Barbecue sauce

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the Onions: Thinly slice the yellow onion. Melt butter in a large sauté pan over medium-high heat. Add the onions and stir to coat them evenly with the melted butter. Cover the pan, slightly tilting the lid to let steam escape, and cook the onions for about 15 minutes, stirring every few minutes, until they achieve a golden brown color.
  2. Prepare the Burger Patties: While the onions cook, place the ground beef in a large bowl. Sprinkle the Lipton onion soup mix over the beef and crack in the egg. Use clean hands to thoroughly combine all ingredients. Form the mixture into 4 even patties. Preheat your grill to medium-high heat.
  3. Grill the Burgers: Cook the patties on the preheated grill for about 6 to 7 minutes per side, or until they reach your desired level of doneness. Place a slice of Provolone cheese on each burger during the last few minutes of grilling to allow it to melt slightly. Once done, transfer the burgers to a platter and cover to keep warm.
  4. Finish the Caramelized Onions: Mix the water with beef bouillon granules and pour this mixture over the golden caramelized onions in the pan. Increase the heat to high and allow the onions to simmer until most of the water evaporates. Remove the pan from heat and stir in the sour cream until well combined, resulting in creamy, flavorful onions.
  5. Assemble the Burgers: Place each cheeseburger on the bottom half of the hamburger bun. Top with the creamy caramelized onions and green leaf lettuce. Add any optional toppings such as barbecue sauce, potato chips, or dill pickles according to your preference. Cover with the top half of the bun and serve warm.

Notes

  • Using 85% lean ground chuck offers a good balance of flavor and juiciness for the patties.
  • Be careful when simmering the onions and bouillon mixture to avoid burning or drying out the onions.
  • Optional toppings like potato chips add a delightful crunch and contrast to the creamy onions.
  • Adjust cooking times based on your grill’s temperature and preferred burger doneness.
  • For a more intense onion flavor, you can cook the onions longer for deeper caramelization before adding the bouillon mixture.
