Ingredients
Scale
Protein
- 1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend)
- 4 slices thick-cut turkey bacon
- 1 cup German-style beer cheese
Vegetables & Greens
- 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
- 1 cup fresh arugula
Bread & Spreads
- 4 pretzel buns
- 1 tablespoon whole grain mustard
Seasonings & Oils
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 1 tablespoon olive oil or butter (for sautéing onions)
Instructions
- Preheat grill or skillet: Preheat your grill or skillet to medium-high heat to ensure it’s hot enough for cooking the patties and preparing other ingredients.
- Form and season patties: Gently shape the ground beef into 4 equal-sized patties. Season each patty generously with salt and pepper on both sides to enhance flavor.
- Cook turkey bacon: Place the turkey bacon slices in the skillet and cook until they are crispy. Once done, transfer the bacon to a plate and set aside.
- Caramelize onions: Using the same skillet, add olive oil or butter and sauté the thinly sliced onions over medium heat. Cook them slowly for about 10-15 minutes until they become soft and caramelized, developing a sweet flavor.
- Cook beef patties with cheese: Grill or cook the beef patties on the skillet for about 4-5 minutes per side, depending on thickness and desired doneness. In the last minute of cooking, spoon the German-style beer cheese on top of each patty to melt.
- Toast pretzel buns: While the patties cook, toast the pretzel buns until they are golden brown and slightly crisp, either on the grill or in a toaster oven.
- Assemble the burger: Spread whole grain mustard on the bottom half of each pretzel bun. Layer with the cheese-topped beef patty, crispy turkey bacon, caramelized onions, and fresh arugula. Top with the other bun half.
- Serve immediately: Serve the burgers hot for the best taste and texture.
Notes
- Using ground beef with 80/20 fat ratio helps keep the patties juicy.
- Cooking onions low and slow is key for perfect caramelization.
- You can substitute turkey bacon with regular bacon if preferred.
- Beer cheese melts best when added toward the end of cooking.
- Pretzel buns add a wonderful chewy texture and subtle saltiness.
- Serve with a side of fries or a crisp salad for a complete meal.
