Ingredients
Scale
Base
- 40-48 pretzel crisps (or Pretzel Crackers, or 2-3 cups pretzels not sticks)
Toffee
- 1 cup butter (2 sticks, unsalted)
- 1 cup brown sugar (packed)
Toppings
- 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
- ½ cup sprinkles (or M&Ms, or candies of choice)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350℉ to prepare for baking the toffee layer.
- Prepare Pan: Line a rimmed sheet pan (15″×10″) with parchment paper or aluminum foil sprayed with cooking spray, or use a nonstick silicone baking mat to prevent sticking.
- Arrange Pretzels: Place the pretzel crisps in a single even layer on the bottom of the prepared tray. Break a few pretzels if needed to fill gaps along the edges for a complete base.
- Make Toffee: In a medium pot over medium-low heat, combine butter and brown sugar. Bring to a rolling boil while stirring occasionally, then cook for 3 minutes or until the mixture bubbles and turns an amber color. Remove from heat and carefully pour evenly over the pretzel layer. Quickly spread with a spatula to cover all pretzels evenly. (Optional: Use a candy thermometer to ensure the toffee reaches between 270℉-290℉.)
- Bake Toffee: Place the sheet pan in the oven and bake for 3-5 minutes until the toffee starts bubbling.
- Add Chocolate: Remove pan from oven and immediately scatter chocolate chips over the hot toffee. Let them sit for 1-2 minutes to soften, then spread evenly using a spatula. If chocolate isn’t melting easily, return the pan to the oven for 1-2 minutes and then spread again.
- Top with Sprinkles: Once the chocolate is spread, sprinkle your choice of sprinkles, M&Ms, or candies over the top evenly.
- Cool and Harden: Allow the toffee and chocolate to cool completely at room temperature, or refrigerate for 30 minutes to 1 hour until firm.
- Serve: Flip the tray and peel off the parchment paper or foil. Break or cut the toffee into pieces and enjoy! Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature or in the fridge.
Notes
- Ensure the toffee reaches the proper temperature for perfect texture; a candy thermometer can help achieve this.
- Use pretzel crisps or flat pretzel crackers for an even layer and easier topping coverage.
- Feel free to customize toppings with your choice of sprinkles, candies, or nuts.
- Store in an airtight container to maintain freshness and prevent sogginess.
- For easier cutting, refrigerate the toffee before slicing.
