This easy-to-make dessert balances sweet and salty flavors with a satisfying crunch, perfect for holiday parties, gift-giving, or anytime you need a sweet snack.
Ingredients
Scale
Base
- 40-48 pretzel crisps (or Pretzel Crackers, or 2-3 cups pretzels, broken if needed)
Toffee
- 1 cup unsalted butter (2 sticks)
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
Topping
- 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
- ½ cup sprinkles (or M&M’s, or candies of choice)
Instructions
- Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F to prepare for baking the toffee over the pretzel base.
- Prepare the Baking Sheet: Line a rimmed sheet pan (15″×10″) with parchment paper or aluminum foil sprayed with cooking spray, or use a nonstick silicone baking mat to prevent sticking.
- Arrange Pretzels: Place the pretzel crisps in a single even layer on the bottom of the prepared pan. Break a few pretzels as necessary to fill any gaps and cover the entire pan surface evenly.
- Make the Toffee: In a medium pot over medium-low heat, combine the butter and packed brown sugar. Stir occasionally and bring to a rolling boil. Continue boiling for 3 minutes or until the mixture bubbles and turns amber-colored. For precision, use a candy thermometer to reach 270°F–290°F. Remove from heat.
- Pour Toffee Over Pretzels: Carefully pour the hot toffee evenly over the pretzels in the pan. Quickly use a spatula to spread it evenly, ensuring all pretzels are covered before it sets.
- Bake the Toffee: Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 3-5 minutes until the toffee mixture starts to bubble.
- Add Chocolate: Remove the pan from the oven and immediately scatter the semi-sweet chocolate chips evenly on top. Let them sit for 1-2 minutes to soften, then spread the melted chocolate using a spatula. If the chocolate isn’t melting easily, return the pan to the oven for 1-2 minutes and then spread.
- Decorate: Sprinkle the top with your choice of sprinkles, M&M’s, or other candies while the chocolate is still melted.
- Cool and Set: Allow the toffee to cool completely at room temperature or refrigerate for 30 minutes to 1 hour until firm.
- Break into Pieces: Once set, flip the tray over onto a flat surface, remove the parchment or foil, and break or cut the toffee into pieces.
- Serve and Store: Enjoy immediately or store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature or in the refrigerator.
Notes
- Use pretzel crisps or broken pretzels to get a flat base that melts and binds well with the toffee.
- Monitor the toffee carefully when boiling as it can burn quickly.
- If you want a firmer toffee, use a candy thermometer to ensure the temperature reaches the hard crack stage (270°F-290°F).
- Chocolate chips melt best when added right after removing the pan from the oven while the toffee is still hot.
- Customize toppings with your favorite candies or nuts for variation.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container to maintain crunchiness.
