Ingredients
Scale
Filling
- 3 small/medium apples, peeled and sliced thin
- ¼ cup brown sugar
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
- ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 ½ teaspoons ground cinnamon
- Pinch of sea salt
Pastry
- 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
- 3 tablespoons melted butter, divided
- 2 tablespoons honey (optional, for glazing)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) to ensure it reaches the right temperature for baking the tart.
- Prepare Apple Mixture: Peel and slice the apples very thin. In a small bowl, combine the sliced apples with 2 tablespoons of melted butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla extract, and a pinch of sea salt. Toss well to coat the apples evenly with the spices and sugar.
- Prepare Puff Pastry: Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and lay the thawed puff pastry sheet on top. Using a sharp knife, score a border about one inch from the edge of the pastry, making a shallow cut that doesn’t go all the way through. This border will help the pastry puff up and contain the apple juices while baking.
- Dock the Pastry and Butter the Border: Poke holes with a fork in the center area inside the scored border to prevent excessive puffing. Brush the exposed border with the remaining 1 tablespoon of melted butter to enhance browning and flavor.
- Arrange Apples: Neatly arrange the apple slices on the prepared puff pastry within the scored border. You can arrange them in neat rows or a fanned pattern according to your preference.
- Bake the Tart: Bake the tart in the preheated oven for about 20 minutes, or until the pastry edges are puffed up and golden brown. Check around 15 minutes and then monitor every 2 minutes to prevent over-browning.
- Glaze and Serve: Remove the tart from the oven and brush the apple slices with honey for a glossy finish. If the honey is thick, warm it gently in the microwave for about 15 seconds before brushing. Allow the tart to cool for several minutes before serving to let the juices set and to avoid burning your mouth.
Notes
- Use firm, tart apples such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp for the best flavor and texture.
- Make sure to thaw the puff pastry completely before baking to ensure even puffing and doneness.
- Scoring the pastry border and docking the center prevents the entire sheet from puffing evenly, creating a crusted edge that holds the apples and juices.
- The honey glaze is optional but adds a beautiful sheen and extra sweetness to the tart.
- Serve the tart warm or at room temperature, optionally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
