Description

These Turkey and Stuffing Meatballs combine savory ground turkey and sausage with flavorful Stovetop stuffing for a comforting, hearty dish perfect for family dinners. Baked to perfection and finished under the broiler for a golden top, these meatballs are delicious served alongside classic sides like mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce.

Ingredients

Scale

Vegetables and Broth

  • ½ cup yellow onion, minced
  • 1 rib celery, very finely diced
  • ¾ cup chicken broth
  • ¼ cup water

Fats and Butter

  • 4 tablespoons butter, divided

Meat and Stuffing

  • 1 (6 oz.) box turkey Stovetop stuffing (chicken or turkey flavor)
  • 1 lb. ground turkey (85% lean)
  • ½ lb. ground sausage (preferably pork sausage)

Other

  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 large egg, whisked

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 400° F to prepare for baking the meatballs.
  2. Sauté Vegetables: In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Add the minced onions and finely diced celery, cooking gently while stirring frequently for 5-6 minutes until softened and fragrant.
  3. Prepare the Stuffing Mixture: Add the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter, chicken broth, and water to the saucepan. Bring the mixture to a boil, then stir in the box of turkey Stovetop stuffing. Lower the heat to low, stir thoroughly to combine, then remove from heat. Transfer this mixture to a large bowl and allow it to cool for 2-3 minutes.
  4. Mix Meat and Stuffing: Season the ground turkey with salt and pepper to taste, then add it to the bowl with the stuffing mixture. Add the ground sausage and the whisked egg. Stir together carefully until all ingredients are evenly incorporated.
  5. Form Meatballs: Shape the mixture into meatballs approximately 1 ¾ inches in diameter. Place the meatballs onto a lightly greased, light-colored baking sheet, spacing them evenly.
  6. Bake Meatballs: Bake the meatballs in the preheated oven at 400° F for 15 minutes until cooked through.
  7. Broil for Browning: Switch the oven to broil at 450° F and broil the meatballs for 2 minutes, watching closely to prevent over-browning or burning.
  8. Serve: Remove the meatballs from the oven and serve them hot with classic sides such as mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, and cranberry sauce for a complete meal.

Notes

  • Ground sausage adds flavor and moisture; you can use pork or turkey sausage based on preference.
  • Ensure meatballs are placed on a light-colored baking sheet to prevent over-browning on the bottom.
  • Watch closely during broiling as the meatballs can brown quickly.
  • Use lean ground turkey to keep the dish from becoming too fatty.
  • For a gluten-free version, substitute the stuffing with a gluten-free mix.
